Yoko Ono Sells Out John Lennon To Creationist Manufactroversy.

I like to think I've seen it all, or at least a good portion it. But this Friday, a new movie comes out; one that is nothing more than creationist propaganda in the fine tradition of cigarettes don't kill you and global warming is just a natural occurrence.

The movie, Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, has been reviewed and reviewed and discussed.

But what hasn't been discussed as much is the fact that Yoko Ono either sold or gave the rights to "Imagine" to the producers of the film. In screenings around the country, and in copies of the movie reviewed, everyone notes the odd inclusion of the song.

I guess that the $20 million plus the estate earns every year isn't enough for Yoko Ono, not only does she feel the need to license the song out, she probably held out for the highest bidder, in this case, the money behind the movie, Walt Ruloff, who made over one hundred million dollars selling his company to Microsoft. (Irony is that a company who makes computers, perhaps the ultimate daily example of the higher power of science in our lives, indirectly funded a movie that doesn't believe science should be taught in schools.)

Of course, it wasn't just Yoko Ono that sold out, the Killers did too (and I am a bigger Killers fan than I am fan of hers to be honest.) Their song, All These Things That I've Done, is also in the movie. I hear that the going rate for a song like this is a million dollars, again, why can't the Killers be happy with the tens of millions they are making every year? Who knows?

"Imagine" and "All These Things I've Done" are great great songs -- maybe one day they'll get sold to a movie I actually am going to see.

Yoko: breaking up the band for 30 years. (none / 0)

Creationists make me sick.  My father told me about this movie... I'm almost tempted to go see it, but I would have to pay for a different movie and then sneak in... and I'm really not into that.

Gone are the days when the rights to our favorite music are owned by people who care about how it is used.

Ah well.  I'll go watch Iron Man instead.

Everything is for sale to the highest bidder.
Sorry.

A few years back, I heard Janice Joplin singing "Mercedes-Benz" for a Mercedes-Benz ad. Totaly repulsive. The ultimate insult - since Joplin sung it to criticize our materialist world.  Gawd, she must be spinning in her grave if she knows what it's like now.

Didn't she have a psychedelicized Rolls Royce? (2.00 / 1)

or some other expensive car...

Boy, she was another extremely talented, but tortured musician, who died prematurely.

Joplin & Fogerty blasphemed (2.00 / 1)

that is disgusting. the same thing ahppened with John Fogerty's callsic anti-American rant, "Fortunate Son." to which he doesn't own the rights. so it was sold to some truck company.
the song says "some folks are born, made to wave the flag, man they're red white and blue," before going on to the punchline "it ain't me, i ain't no fortunate one."

the ad just uses the "some folks are born, made to wave the flag, man they're red white and blue," part, leaving the exact oposite impression of the song's meaning.

fucking sleazebags.

Its quite possible she didn't know.. (none / 0)

many people/projects probably license songs. Its probably handled by an agent. I doubt very strongly if she reviews each and every one. John was a member of the Beatles, and their music is still very much among the most played music in the world. I would not be surprised if most of us heard at least part of a Beatles song at least one or two times a day, probably much more. They are used in commercials all the time.

And its been 27 years, right(?) since John Lennon's life was tragically cut short...

Re: Its quite possible she didn't know.. (none / 0)

Licensing the right to a song that you then record yourself is one thing - Michael Jackson owns the publishing rights to the Beatles song catalog so he makes the decisions about who can record Beatle music and he profits from that.  Not the Beatles or their estates.

However, icensing the right to a RECORDING is a very different proposition and something that has rarely happened with a Beatle recording. Imagine isn't a Beatle recording though, it's a Lennon recording. I do think Yoko has the rights to the recording though it could be the record company. Whoever it is has only said yes fewer than five times or so over the years.

Creepy that this was allowed.

People say no to money all the time.  Abba was offered $1b to reunite and do a year long, world wide tour. That's $250 million for each of them for a year's worth of work. They said no.

i hope you owe her an apology (none / 0)

from the link you provided:

"Either Expelled has a disproportionately-large music budget (for how bad of a film it is), or they are using songs they haven't paid for in their Director's Cut private screenings (that may be changed before the official nationwide release)."

i HOPE this is the case, and Ono didn't approve it. if so, you would owe her an apology (and i hope you'll put in a title of a diary). if not, she'd owe John one.

i would repectfully suggest that in the meantime you put a Question Mark after your title of this diary.

Re: i hope you owe her an apology (2.00 / 1)

Okay, this makes sense- you can get temporary rights to all sorts of stuff for very little money ($500 for a year). The owners will let you use their music in formats where you won't be making money (festivals, etc) in hopes that you'll come back at a later point and actually license the music itself once you have the capability of making money.

John Lennon was a sellout.  Who cares what happens to his tired old songs?

Until recently I was selling drugs, and now I'm selling Obama T-shirts.
